To the Allies surprise, a vastly numerically superior Japanese army found their way to Los Negros Island during the first night. On Day 2, the USS BUSH and destroyer USS STOCKTON engaged in repeated bombardment and strafing of Japanese locations, inhibiting any effective counter attack and reducing potential American casualties.
Because bombardment and strafing occurred so close to beach, the ships numbers were visible to the troops on shore. It is from this action that the U. S. Army personnel first coined the USS BUSH nickname "The Fighting '29". An onshore Army commander is noted to have said, "The Navy didn't support us, they saved our necks!"
